Heavy Metal Style Focus
In this week’s Style Focus, we’re looking at ultimate heavy metal glam fashion: leather, studs, spikes, buckles, boots you can stage-stomp in, and accessories that slay hard. Inspired by some of the awesome Girls Who Slay in rock and metal bands, we’re looking at the style of women in the alternative music scene and how they add to their incredible stage presence and performing prowess with a hardcore, ultra-empowering look that screams rock star.
Leather (and of course vegan leather!) is one sure fire way to add a hefty dose of metal to your look. Whether you’re bold enough to go for a Lzzy Hale style full leather ensemble, or just add a bit of edge with a leather jacket or some wet-look leggings, a bit, or a lot, of (faux) leather will make you feel like a total rock star! Whether glossy and sleek or weathered and grungy, leather clothing and accessories add that biker style edge that gives your look some punch.
Spikes, rivets, buckles, zips, studs…go crazy with details that make your outfits look edgy, and quite literally look for 'metal' details that give off warrior like vibes…you can layer up with accessories, or invest in good quality clothes with loads of awesome details to take your look to next level slay. Brands like Devil Fashion and Punk Rave are great for extreme detail and apocalyptic looks.
Distressed denim, torn fishnets, slashed tops, frayed fabric – make your look messy and rough around the edges for that raw, dystopian look. The same goes for your hair and makeup – you want that perfectly imperfect, wild look that says you’re ready for whatever life throws at you! Team a dark red or nude lip with a smudged, super dramatic smoky eye for a glamorous yet edgy look. Take inspiration from Arch Enemy lead singer Alissa White-Gluz and Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil - they know how to work a distressed look!
Every rock star needs a pair of boots to stomp around in, and so do you! You never feel more powerful and ready to slay than when you’re rocking a pair New Rocks or some gothic platforms from Iron Fist or Demonia – whether classic biker boots, platforms or stilettos are your thing, a pair of heavy metal boots are a must!
Military inspired styles are huge in the metal fashion scene, and will give you a guaranteed strong look. Look for details like rivets, epaulettes, frogging, ornate buttons and holster style belts and harnesses. For a cool, metal-inspired look that isn’t too obvious, mix subtle military details in with grungy denim or more feminine velvet and lacy styles.
Feminine Meets Tomboy
We love that princess-of-darkness look that many female metal singers (think Amy Lee & Simone Simons) pull off, combining edgy, tomboy elements with feminine, fairytale styles – leather against silk corsets, elaborate hairstyles, distressed tulle skirts, and medieval or Victorian influences with a dystopian edge create a dark fantasy element that often goes hand in hand with the epic sound of symphonic metal.
Heavy Metal Accessories
Go bold with accessories – huge crosses, chunky rings, arm warmers and cuffs, harnesses, chains…layer them up and don't be afraid of clashing textures to add to that rough-around-the-edges glamour that makes classic, metal-chick-cool so standout.
Ultimate Rock Chick Hair
Some of our ultimate hair crushes are female metal singers – Carla Harvey & Heidi Shepherd, Noora Louhimo and Alissa White-Gluz to name a few! We love the way that their eye-popping hair colours come alive on stage, and look incredible whipped back and forth (everyone loves a good hair whip!) But bright colours aren’t a must – many metal style icons have kept their natural hair colours, or gone for more subtle shades, and that looks amazing too. We love flowing locks with teased out volume for an updated biker babe vibe, or a warrior inspired braided up do with plenty of back-combed volume.
We hope our Heavy Metal style focus has inspired to find your inner rock goddess and unleash her to the outside world! If you want to achieve an awesome metal inspired look, why not check out Rock Spirit
