What to wear as a gothic wedding guest

The golden rule for any wedding guest still applies: don't upstage the couple. For a goth, that doesn't mean giving up black or dressing like someone else for the day. A long lace or velvet dress in black, burgundy or deep purple looks elegant at almost any wedding, traditional or alternative. Avoid too much white and ivory, and if you're going to an alternative wedding, it's worth checking whether the bride is wearing black before you choose your most dramatic gown.

Dresses for every kind of wedding

Keep accessories elegant rather than theatrical. A statement piece from Alchemy Gothic or our necklaces and chokers, a delicate gothic headband, and a small handbag are usually all you need. Choose gothic shoes you can stand and dance in all day, and bear in mind that heels and wet grass don't mix.

Sizing

Most of our wedding guest dresses come from Dark in Love and Punk Rave, which use combined sizing. We've mapped them to UK sizes as closely as we can, but please check the garment size chart in the product images before ordering. Punk Rave in particular tends to come up a little small. Can I wear black to a wedding?

At most modern UK weddings, yes, especially for afternoon and evening celebrations. Some older guests may still see black as mourning wear, so if you're unsure, add colour with burgundy, purple or dark florals, or bring in some sparkle with your jewellery.

What should I wear to a gothic wedding?

Check the dress code first, as many alternative couples love their guests to go dark and dramatic. Even so, leave the biggest statement to the couple. A beautiful gothic dress with a few well-chosen accessories is the sweet spot.
